When your best friend is Oprah, who can send you around the country trying Esquire’s Best Sandwiches in America, you could say it’s good to be King. Because my best friend isn’t in the Forbes 400, I could only complete one leg of the tour.
Bricco in West Hartford, Connecticut, serves exceptional Italian comfort food in a setting that’s rustic, warm and stylish. Like a Ralph Lauren sweater.
Bricco’s grilled lobster and cheese sandwich ($16) made it into Esquire’s list of 40 finest meals on sliced bread, and it made me weep with happiness. It’s so good, I dried my tears with $20 bills.
Fresh country white bread is grilled until crispy, fragrant with warm butter. Then it’s stuffed with sweet claw meat, held together with melted Havarti cheese. If that’s not enough, it comes with a stack of battered onion rings which are ultra-crunchy and delicious without condiments.
Because this sandwich is for adults, it’s accompanied by chick peas, celery and artichokes tossed in vinaigrette to cut the richness. Try this easy and decadent recipe at home, courtesy of Bricco’s Chef/Owner Billy Grant:
Billy Grant’s Lobster Grilled Cheese
- 2 slices of thickly sliced country white bread
- 4 ounces chunk fresh lobster meat
- 2 slices Havarti cheese
- Unsalted butter to butter both sides of the bread
Toast the sandwich on the buttered side until golden brown on both sides. Place in a 400° oven for a few minutes until cheese melts. Allow to cool a minute, then enjoy! Serves one.[/tab][/tabgroup]
Also featured in Good Food Magazine, this sandwich is the top and perhaps only reason to visit Hartford.
