My scorned heart has since been ever-so-selective about what’s worth waking up for before noon. Yet, if every morning promised to taste like The Cottage, I’d tape alarm clocks to my head.
Nestled in downtown La Jolla, The Cottage is known to have many people flocking toward its goodies. Consider it the crack of dawn. Although many are met with a 45-minute wait for a table, it’s tough to complain when waiters are constantly bringing out free coffee cake and coffee on a cart to keep the mob from wielding their pitchforks so early in the morning.
The Cottage features a brunch menu that I could swear signals harps in the background the moment it is opened. Whether fancying omelets, Benedicts or batters, you’ll take a bite of any dish and appreciate the golden magic tucked inside those tiny oval treasure boxes called eggs.
More than just a pretty plate, the dishes signal their “come hither” look and definitely do not disappoint. Eggs La Jolla ($12) is Eggs Benedict with Canadian bacon, sautéed mushrooms, spinach, roasted tomato and roasted garlic. Showered over it is house-made Hollandaise, a mixture of egg yolk, butter and lemon juice.
The colorful presentation and English muffin peeking underneath the egg almost made me believe my meal was smiling back at me. And then hunger struck.
Other items on the menu include stuffed French toast ($12), which is exactly what it sounds like–country style French toast aligned on a plate stuffed with strawberries mixed in mascarpone cheese. It is a hug on a plate. An assortment of freshly squeezed juice, wines and beers are also available for some brunch and booze.
Breakfast in bed never sounded so repulsive.
