Game Roast at Equinox

Rabbit, pheasant, and quail for dinner? Yes, don’t mind if I do.

Equinox, located just steps from the White House, launched its themed dinners last week with a Game Roast.

The evening kicked off with a reception on the patio (talk about lucking out with the weather!) featuring Rabbit & Pheasant Sausages and Sweet Jesus & Choptank Oysters with beer pairings from Goose Island. The oysters were good, and the sausages were amazing, especially with Chef Todd Gray holding court by the grill.

My tip for the next reception would be to put some highboys around the patio so you didn’t have to do that awkward balancing act of holding your sausage/oyster plate in your left hand, wrapping your left fingers around the beer and using your right hand to scoop up the food. I saw two accidents — and in the spirit of full disclosure, it is no surprise that this uncoordinated person was one of them.

After one hour on the patio we moved indoors for the next three courses. At dinners such as these I always enjoy hearing stories from the beverage partners, getting a nice-sized pour, as well as making new friends with other guests sitting at your table.

The main course was a Spiced Cervena Venison and Cider Brined Rack of Boar. The boar was excellent, cooked to perfection and worked perfectly with the stewed red cabbage and duck fat potatoes. It was also my favorite pairing of the night served with a Peppe Nero with a nice, earthy finish.

As for the Bourbon & Ginger Bread Pudding, I was just upset that my table ate the whole thing so there was none I could ask to take home.
