[dropcap]I[/dropcap]f you’re looking to break out of chicken tenders and faux quesadillas in Clarendon, The Green Pig offers finely-crafted farm-to-table comfort foods like pork shank, belly and grits for two ($39) and twice baked potato gnocchi ($12).
Dishes arrive in vintage, ceramic Le Creuset, like the bubbling-hot mac-n-cheese ($5).
Even the whimsical plats du jour comes sectioned off like a TV dinner–fish ‘n’ chips on one side, mushy peas on the other. Only the fish isn’t frozen in the middle while the brownie is scalded on the edges.
One snack to try is the Corned Ox Heart Reuben ($7 for three, pictured above), also the name of the epic starring Mel Gibson and Jerry Stiller set in Kew Gardens, Queens. These teeny sandwiches are all sorts of fun–meaty, earthy, tangy and crisp. Don’t forget to pull out the toothpick. You can take an eye out with it.
Mandatory must tries: rabbit cake ($22) with carrots, sugar snap peas and apple; Key lime pie for two–or one very big fan ($12); and the doughnut ($7) which is, “a play on the profiterole, with French table-side chocolate sauce,” says owner/chef Scot Harlan. “It’s a kick in the teeth to the French because it’s got peanut butter.”
